So, many of you know I am looking for a vehicle with more space that can be a film car for downhill skating while also carrying more luggage (skateboards, gear, etc.). I need to seat at least four people, but I just thought about this.... what about a sedan that is just bigger than my Accord? Here is what I am thinking:

My brother owns a 2001 Passat V6 and its a great car. You can find the Passat for sub $4,000 all day long, they are relatively easy to work on after you get all the covers off, just watch out for the secondary air injection (SAI) pump, which is a known weak point and can difficult/expensive to fix. Its mechanically similar to the Audi and most of the parts under the hood are branded as Audi parts. He averages ~25mpg in Los Angeles and around 30mpg cruising on I-5, also its dirt cheap to insure. It fits 4 adults comfortably, but five is a stretch.

The B5 Passat will be a lot easier to maintain than the C5 A6, but that’s not to say it will be easy. Finding either one for less than $4,000 or $5,000, respectively, is no problem, but you could incur that much in maintenance in a year if preventative maintenance wasn’t in the vocabulary of the previous owners. The C5 chassis handles very well and in sport mode you could dare to say it is even engaging and fun in the twisties because quattro. It really is a four passenger car though because of the hump in the backseat.

Maybe a smidge less convenient for your passengers, but I have always loved the Legend Coupe, and access isn’t too difficult to the backseat.

if you want a car that runs, get the legend or the 3.5RL like mine

Also have a look at the ls400s

but if you buy the audi, the vw, the mitsu, or a volvo s80 or a 5 series bimmer like i was once thinking of... be prepared to pay up the butt for repairs that the previous owner skimped on since they were getting rid of the car...

How about an o6 Hyundai Azera? Was the fastest Korean production car when it came out 265hp/255fp with a fast throttle program. Jalop used to do a feature with links to a graph of average longevity and is was Hyundais best. Tons of room. Just get to huge amounts of torque steer in the 235/55/17s, and a sad lack of bolstering in the seats. Timimg chain, no ridiculous maintenance whatsoevet.

LS400. Easy to find solid examples for next to nothing. My ultra clean example was only $5000 and good running cars are even less.
